Volunteer of the Month: Maeva Pennanch

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

Maeva with studentsMaeva, from France, visited Scheel Center after learning that the school was located in Jocotenango, where she is staying. Since her January visit, she’s been a huge help at Scheel as they begin the new school year and has also spent numerous nights giving out dinner at our homeless shelter Santa Madre.

Maeva has helped with administrative tasks like organizing class roster and designing ID cards for our Mothers’ Club. She has also worked with Mothers’ Club and our students, organizing activities, offering emotional support to the mothers, and working with the students to foster respect and unity. Maeva also helps prepare and serve breakfast and lunch, and her positive attitude is motivating students to work hard this year.

The staff and students at Scheel Center love having her around and will be sad to see her go later this month.

VOTM Liz

Liz is a young volunteer coming to us from Minnesota, USA. She decided to take a semester off from school to come serve the poor in Guatemala. And serve she has.

Liz found her calling in our Scheel International Technical Training Center, which provides schooling and educational enrichment opportunities to 150 poor teens and young adults. Liz has been working directly with these young people by providing music therapy and doing home visits with our staff psychologist.

Before volunteering at the Scheel Center, Liz worked as a classroom assistant in our Dreamer Center primary school with our preschool class.

Regardless of a child’s age, Liz has demonstrated compassion, patience, love and understanding. Friendly and outgoing, Liz has quickly made herself a part of the GOD’S CHILD family.
