While thousands of poor Guatemalan villagers fled the erupting Volcan de Fuego (Fire Volcano) outside of Antigua Guatemala, volunteers and staff from the North Dakota-founded GOD’S CHILD Project moved towards the natural disaster.

“We were lucky in that we had supplies on the ground,” said GOD’S CHILD Project founder and executive director Patrick Atkinson. “In July we sent 22,000 lbs. of donated clothing, medicines, and infant nutrition supplement from Bismarck to Guatemala, and most of that had yet to be distributed.” Volunteers and staff worked overnight to prepare those supplies for the estimated 33,000 people affected by Thursday’s volcanic explosion.

Lest We Forget

From Joanne:

Nuestros Ahijados has a small but wonderful project in Guazapa, El Salvador. We are there helping 43 families with food, clothing and educational costs.  We are also helping to educate two young women as nurses in this area which is without the most basic medical care.

I was honored to visit Guazapa for 3 days in July with Wicho Fuentes and Hector Barrundia from the Project. Our presence seemed to mean the world to these people. Wicho brought shoes for some of the girls,  and their delighted squeals and giggles stayed with me all day. Since the people walk everywhere and the roads are entirely mud and rocks, both feet and shoes are in very poor condition.

Recently one of the boys from our group was walking home from work and thieves took his nice black work pants and shoes. I think it takes some gall to steal from people who are already so poor.

There are many additional children and families who could be helped at this site witch is already set up. I could see the pain on Wicho’s face every time he was approached by someone we simply could not help. By the end of our visit, they were asking me too.

If you would like to donate to our families in El Salvador or sponsor a particular child’s education and basic needs, log on to godschild.org, click donate and specify “El Salvador.” Thanks.
